Make like the Royals and escape to the Cotswolds.

The Cotswolds have long been favoured by the Royal Family. Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall have their private residence Highgrove House in the county of Gloucester, close to the pretty market town of Tetbury. Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, lives at Gatcombe Park near Minchinhampton (just 5 miles south of Stroud) and daughter Zara Phillips lives in the area with her husband Mike Tindall. The town of Lypiatt is close to Stroud and is the place Princess Michael of Kent calls home.

Cirencester is often referred to as the capital of the Cotswolds and is home to the Cirencester Park Polo Club, which has welcomed Prince Charles and his sons Prince William and Prince Harry many times over the years, both as players and spectators of the sport.
Cheltenham is another much loved destination of the royals. The Gold Cup Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse each March was a favourite of the Queen Mother and has been visited by the Queen on numerous occasions, along with many other royals and celebrities.

But it’s not just the modern-day Royals who have Cotswold connections.

Sudeley Castle, near Winchcombe, is steeped in history and has royal connections spanning a thousand years. The castle was once home to Queen Katherine Parr, the last surviving wife of King Henry VIII. Henry himself, Anne Boleyn, Lady Jane Grey, Queen Elizabeth I and Richard III have all played a part in Sudeley’s story. King Charles I found refuge here during the Civil War, when his nephew Prince Rupert established headquarters at the castle.
